Hydra

The Hydra, a mythological serpent creature from ancient Greece, couldn’t be killed. When one of its many heads was cut off, two more grew in its place…

It’s like us – undefinable!” laughs Robert. “What’s more, ‘Hydra’ is a perfect title for our new album, because like the monster itself, the record represents the many different sides of our music.

Special guests

Within Temptation collaborated with several special guests on ‘Hydra’: Tarja Turunen, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and metalcore hero Howard Jones, formerly of Killswitch Engage as well as US hip-hop icon Xzibit.

Robert: “Xzibit is amazing. ‘And We Run’ song is about how you’ve got to live your life now. He’s rapping at full force on this song, it’s really heavy.” Sharon adds: “Xzibit brings a new element to our music that we’ve never had before! It’s a new cross-over and we love it!” As for the mighty Tarja, Sharon recalls: “The way she delivers those high melody lines left us all speechless. We had a great time, and the fans responded beyond our expectations.

One of the album’s heaviest tracks, ‘Dangerous’ was recorded with the former Killswitch Engage singer Howard Jones, whose epic vocals are a perfect fit for Sharon’s. “I always loved Howard’s voice,” she says. “He makes the song even heavier than it already is. That song is one of my favorite songs on the record and one of the fastest we’ve ever written. It has the most bass drums we’ve ever used, too, and a very fast riff which we doubled with synths. It’s not a typical synthesizer, though – it’s distorted like a guitar, and it’s very aggressive.

‘Hydra’ goes from strength to strength with ‘Whole World Is Watching’, featuring Soul Asylum’s singer Dave Pirner. “When we wrote ‘Whole World Is Watching’, Dave was at the very top of our list. He has such a captivating voice: it made the song exactly how it needed to be.

    OH MY GOD

  • Taikatalvi

    Xzibit ????? You’re kidding right ??????

  • darksaid

I had always adored your music and covers also, but Xzibit!? Ughm…

  • Nicolas Racine

Digital Premium Album is not available in the Canadian iTune store. I hope it will be soon. I can’t wait!

  • Flavia Fara

Jesus, seriously now, they try to release this album as soon as possible and you’re still complainig about the other guests? Stop it, just stop it! You didn’t even heard the song and you’re starting to complain. So, do all of us a favor and complain when you have listened the album. The whole album.
WT, can’t wait to have the CD in my hands! Live long and prosper m/

  • Anonymous

Yeah but… Xzibit is a rapper. I can’t stand rap.

  • Sam Connolly

The Digital Premium Album is not available in the UK iTune store yet. I hope it doesn’t take to long to become available to pre-order :)

  • darksaid

Well, I have 100% confidence that other songs will be great and epic x) Just a little bit worried about the third song x) I like the title though…

  • Kristin C

Sheet music! Instrumental album! Finally! :D This is going to be my X-mas present to myself.

Staying optimistic until I hear the actual songs. I am actually really curious and amused by this news (speaking as a fan of ten years who never listens to rap or metalcore)..

  • Sanne van Gastel

Going to pre-order the 2CD with key hanger and media book @ Large :) ^-^ can’t wait for the 31th of January!

  • Jules.†

Will it be available on amazon?

  • http://www.northcarolinaeviction.com/ Don Shelton

WT is my favorite; one reason I expanded my horizons and discovered WT, Nightwish, Epica, Lacuna Coil, etc. was to get away from the putrid onslaught here in the US of putting rap in nearly everything. I’m very excited over Hydra, but will be skipping the third track. If wanting to try some different US sounds, blues rock, southern rock, big band, fusion jazz – so many viable alternatives to the aural sewage of rap.

  • Brian Kelman

Yeah. I know all about iTunes Canada, Nicolas. The EP ‘Paradise (What About Us?)’ feat. Tarja still isn’t offered on iTunes Canada. So I’m not counting on the Digital Premium Album being there anytime soon….Amazon.ca lists the physical disc but has never had any available and it is over priced at $23.07….I think I will be content waiting until I can pre-order a Special Edition Double CD with the media book. I sincerely hope that iTunes Canada can get their act together, but my written email requests for songs and videos (such as ‘Paradise’ and Tarja’s ‘Victim of Ritual’) have gotten no action besides a lame reply email…)

  • Flavia Fara

And Sharon sang trance, so, what’s the problem? :) )) Just wait and see the final result

  • José Manuel Jiménez García

Sheet music? YEAH!! I’m a musician (violinist, by the way) and this is just AWESOME! To be able to see the sheet music, play it….. a dream came true!! Of course, I’m preordering the Deluxe Bot Set ;)

  • darksaid

Sharon sang trance alone and trance isn’t rap. Rap is like soulless reading text. I don’t think it’s good music at all. Well, I’ll be more glad if Sharon will sing rap with her angel voice, but not american hip-hop singer) Wait for result either

  • Kristin C

The only thing I’m not satisfied with at this point is … only ten new songs? There’d better be a truckload of B-sides to this monster waiting to be released;)

  • Nicolas Racine

Yeah, same thing with Ayreon, Theory of Everything. It came out last week. There was no preorder, although Arjen announced it on Ayreon’s Facebook page. There was supposed to be a lyrics book with the download, and it was not there. I wrote to the Facebook page about this and Arjen emailed me back personally to ensure that would be corrected. However the record company or iTunes Canada take their sweet time fixing this. I can’t wait for another MP3 seller in Canada, like Google Music.

  • Discouraged Fan

AMEN to that. Though I am curious as to how WT applies the rap to their music. Expanding their area is good and shows growth. Rap in general sucks, US music in general sucks. If only THIS kind of music was more popular here. Closest thing is Evanescence which is way overrated.

  • Anonymous

    Such fun :-)
    Can’t wait^^

  • Discouraged Fan

Being someone from the US who hates rap I agree about rap, however, I am willing to be open minded. I like the idea of them working with artists that are popular here. I wish this kind of music was more mainstream here.

  • Anonymous

You see on the cover that is going to be an exploded cd again, at least :-p ^^

  • Azurys

People, let’s juge after having heard the song. I’m not a huge fan of rap (well, being French, I only know some of the French rap, not the American ones), but I’l still heard all the sing because WT did them so they can be all totally awesome, even the one with Xzibit (that I, in fact don’t know). We’ll see by hearing the song, it can be really great, I mean, it’s WT and Sharon’s voice! (It doesn’t mean it will be a rap song and how can this be bad with Sharon’s voice and WT instruments on it ?) All that just to say we’ll see what it sounds, maybe some will not like it but others will.
By the way, I really like the title and cover! (More than almost three months, arg)
(Oh I’m really interested by the songbook but I suppose I have to preorder the entire deluxe box set to have it?)

  • http://www.northcarolinaeviction.com/ Don Shelton

Absolutely – US contemporary music in general sucks; thank goodness for You Tube, Vevo, Pandora etc. where I can filter most of the nonsense out. What I don’t understand with Evanescence, certainly one of the few bright lights in the US, is with all their success why not more similar bands and why the few similar bands that do exist don’t do very well. Some CCM bands – Skillet, Flyleaf, etc. do fine, and have rabid fan bases, but they are exceptions in this cultural wasteland.

  • Al Westlake

Were you expecting a double album or something? 10 songs is a perfectly legit amount for an album…

  • james hubbard

Not really. The only other album I’ve ever seen that only had 10 songs was The Birthday Massacre’s last album.

  • Gregorio Puga

Great for you guys, but… only 10 songs? T.T’

  • james hubbard

WTF people, I don’t generally like rap either, but if you can’t manage to at least be open to listening to rap happening for like half a song, you need to grow the fuck up. Not ALL rap is so bad that it can’t be listened to without one’s ears bleeding. I’m actually very interested to see how they will blend that sound into their sound as a band. Yes, it may suck, but it may also be amazing.

  • james hubbard

    IKR. I guess the 4 covers make 14 but still… it’s disappointing.

  • Guest

Try listening to pretty much every Iron Maiden album ever… 10 songs or less. Metallica’s Master of Puppets… less than 10. WT’s own albums… Enter has less than 10. Mother Earth has 10…

  • Gregorio Puga

Exactly. A band that granted their fans the honour of singing with Tarja won’t let a song sound disappointing. I trust WT. I know it’ll be magnificent.

  • Al Westlake

Mother Earth had 10 songs, Enter had even less. Iron Maiden have released 15 albums, virtually all of them 10 or less. Master of Puppets by Metallica had less than 10. Epica’s The Phantom Agony had less than 10. Century Child by Nightwish… 10 exactly. Bonus tracks don’t count. I’ve seen great albums with as little as 8 songs, quality not quantity my friend.

  • Al Westlake

Sorry, why is the concept of a 10 song album so mind blowing to you people? Discounting bonus tracks WT have already released records with 10 songs of less, loads of bands have!

  • james hubbard

No, Tarja’s voice is terrible and I wish they’d have gotten literally anyone else in the world to be on that song.

  • james hubbard

Yes, but every album by pretty much everyone always has at least 2-3 songs that suck. When you subtract those 2 or 3 songs from a starting amount of 10 you’re left with 7 or 8, basically just an EP’s worth of listenable material. I’d like to have a decent quantity of quality music.

  • Brian Kelman

Tarja’s “Colours In The Dark” has 10 songs on the main album (+ 1 for download with the Special Edition; + 3 for download with the Box Set). It isn’t quantity that matters; it is quality. After all one of my all time personal favourites, Deep Purple’s “Machine Head”, had 7.

  • Gregorio Puga

Wow! You must be in that 0,00000001% that doesn’t like Tarja. Anyway, as we say in Spain, “When it comes to likes, there is nothing written”

  • Gregorio Puga

It didn’t blow my mind, haha. It’s just I can’t get enough of them.

  • Mário Rodrigues

    I want… I NEEEED…! *.*

  • Discouraged Fan

Exactly. If it wasn’t for youtube and a good online friend YEARS back I wouldn’t have ever found Within Temptation or this genre. At the time I thought Evanescence was the shit but now I hear Sharon, Tarja, Simone and Floor among numerous others that I will never get to see live unless I go to Europe and I find Evanescence to be very bland even though its the closest thing to this style of music that gets any attention here. I listen to some more main stream american rock music, but a lot of it still sucks. I wish Blood and Chocolate (the movie) had been done better since Stand My Ground by WT was sort of a theme song for the movie itself, but no the movie had to be a piece of crap. lol I watched that movie SIMPLY because the movie trailer had WT as its music.

  • Devanea

I have to admit, while I love WT I almost facepalmed when I saw Radioactive as one of the covers. I’m sure it will be great, as I love the WT version of Grenade (hate the original) but the place where I worked played the radio and the radio played that song ALL the freaking time and I just… want to bang my head against a wall when I hear that song. I will give it a chance though only because its WT.

  • Sarah Lynne

You stole the words I was about to type. I couldn’t agree more.

  • http://www.northcarolinaeviction.com/ Don Shelton

B & C is in my Netflix cue, but haven’t seen it yet. Sorry to hear it’s so bad. I was fortunate enough to catch WT on their US tour two years ago. Incredible. Had to fly to Baltimore, but front row for WT – priceless. Always hoping they will be able to hop the pond again someday; give us both a chance for the live experience.

  • Sarah Lynne

Blood and Chocolate was how I found WT in the first place, so even though it wasn’t the best quality of movie or plot, I still love it for that reason. WT introduced me to the genre to begin with, something I clung to as an escape from the mediocrity of rap and pop of the U.S.. Now they’re *including* rap? The irony scares me.

  • Devanea

Its not a horrible movie, its decent enough to watch at least once. Its just not what I was hoping it would be. If movies are really good and popular the music tends to get attention too. I actually saw Within Temptation on their tour they did in the US right after they got their US record deal with Road Runner records in 2007. I saw them in Minneapolis, MN. In fact I met Sharon on accident, my dad, friend and I were at the bar ordering some food before the concert started and Sharon was sitting at the table right behind us. Asked my dad to take a picture for her and I turn around to look only because I was curious. Took me a moment to realize who it was. I’m sure as a fan you can imagine my reaction! She was sitting AT the table when we walked in.

I was immensely disappointed about their last trip to the US two years ago, as they only went to very specific cities and I couldn’t see them SOOO its been almost 7 years since I’ve seen them live. They are doing this world tour so I hope it includes a more of the US then their last trip here.

  • Devanea

Within Temptation introduced me to the genre as well. First song I ever heard was Stand My Ground on youtube, search their other songs and had to buy the CD, at the time I had to literally order it from the UK. Then sometime later, not sure exactly how long, maybe like a year or six months they got the deal in the US and released a Silent Force album specifically for the US with some bonus material. I bought that too because I had worn out my first copy anyway. I love a lot of the bands in the genre but Within Temptation will always be my favorite. Rap, pop or not so long as they remain rock and they keep Sharon, I don’t mind them testing new waters and expanding their sound. They clearly haven’t lost their foundation though, Silver Moonlight is proof of that.

  • Jakub Jas

You should know that they’ve already covered it and released as a part of Q-Music Sessions CD ; ) So it’s nothing new…

  • Devanea

Still facepalmed regardless. Haven’t heard the radioactive WT cover. Heard most of the others.

  • Jakub Jas

I agree completely, this is not where those covers belong but… I guess Q-Music again paid for it :P

  • Devanea

I listened to the radioactive cover and I actually like it. Not my favorite cover they did but they make all the songs they did sound like gold.

  • Victor Schultz

Sheet music, finally!!! I wonder if it will also be sold independently. I’d love to have the songbook, but I don’t care about guitar picks, instrumental CDs or vinyls.

BTW, perhaps WT could eventually release songbooks for the previous albums, or at least one with their greatest hits. I’m sure it’d make a lot of fans happy.

  • Al Westlake

Not disputing consistency with you.. I’m inclined to agree… still does not change the fact that 10 is a legit number of songs for an album… you said you’d only heard one album with 10 songs… I think you’ll find there are plenty of albums with only 10 songs or less… that was the only point I was trying to make.

  • Al Westlake

Fair play my friend, can’t argue with wanting more WT. But all the same, 10 songs is a legit number for an album… just don’t understand the controversy surrounding that.

  • Cam Chung

January 2014 is too far away!!! atleast give a preview of one of the new song!!!!!

  • lauren

when would be in Malaysia ..????

  • Colin Stok

Wow, the album title really sounds awesome and the artwork is truly beautiful! :D The collaborations are such a surprise as well, I really did not expect to ever hear a rapper like Xzibit on a WT album, hahaha! ;) The bonus tracks are a bit weird though. I hope that the physical release has different bonus tracks, because I don’t see the point of releasing those Q-covers physically again (I would personally not pay the extra money for the 2CD-version if it only has those old cover songs on it and some tracks with commentary). I was actually hoping for some live tracks from the Sanctuary or Elements concerts maybe on some edition of the album (especially the performances of Iron, Lost, Say My Name, Candles, The Last Dance and Stairway to the Skies). But I’m sure the album itself will be amazing, I can’t wait! :D

  • http://www.northcarolinaeviction.com/ Don Shelton

    That is a great story!

  • MAU_X64

    only 10 songs?, and 7 to listen… :(

  • Anonymous

This sounds awesome!!! I would love most of that package (except the vinyl)! It would be awesome to get the sheet music!! Does anyone know if they are going to release the sheet music for the previous albums? Also, is the presale for all countries (because the shipping and handling is huge) – I mean are they going to have presales for each country or region like North America or Europe, etc.

  • Wouter de Rooij

Isn’t the rule supposed to be quality over quantity? And besides, a lot of the other albums only had 10 or even less songs on them. Enter for example only has 8 songs, Mother Earth and The Silent force both have 10 songs (both not counting the Intros).

  • Natalie Anne Molyneux

Ordered the Limited Edition version. I would love the album cover as a wallpaper, I love it!! Can’t wait to listen to the album and I am very interested in your song with Xzibit x

  • Ethan Leka

    I think i want it!!!!

  • Gary Moose Long

For the love of god….please come to the United States!

  • MAU_X64

buy it with http://www.emp-online.com of your country, is cheaper. The Nuclearblast website has an expensive shipping.
    In my country:
    EMP = 80 euros
    Nuclearblast = 138 dollars

  • Cam Chung

lol, what has WT become, lol they are actually collaborating with Xzibit!! LOL This is going to be interesting….can’t wait!!

  • David Westwood

Ordered my copy on Amazon UK – Excited!

  • Arek

There is no wrong in trance, Armin’s stuff is as good as WT music.
I can listen black metal on one day and day after go to the disco. i’m not a kind of metal fanboy

Rap isn’t the same; i’ll probably have to skip the third song and i suppose that before listening. I’m sure it will be a rap song :|

  • ladam033 .

    nice, very nice !!! :)

  • Kristin C

Ah, but Iron Maiden and Metallica and Epica and WT’s Enter/ME albums all have really long track lengths (typically 6-11 minutes long or even longer). That is always a good excuse for keeping the number of tracks down. A WT song from TSF onwards has a typical length of somewhere around four minutes to five and a half. Besides, WT has kept the trend at 11-12 tracks per album ever since TSF, that’s what I was reacting to. Anyway, they always put out several B-sides, so I hope they continue to treat us with that as well. :-)

Looking at my massive music library, albums with shorter songs typically have 13-15 tracks on them, but please don’t read this as a criticism of WT, just as a little “nooo I want more songs from my favourite band because I can’t get enough!”

  • NANDITO PEREZITO

    Y A SUR AMERICA CUANDO VIENEN……..

  • Haerul Arifin

    damn , can’t wait..

  • Yoho Rog

I am wondering why you have to use iTunes to get digital versions. I am not using iTunes and other Apple products. I have been trying to buy mp3 versions of the latest albums in Norway. So far I only find singles. I know I can buy the CD and rip it to mp3 but I thought in 2013 it should be able to buy a mp3 album online.

  • Anonymous

Hi! What’s the URL to your photo?
Have you received an answer yet?

  • viktor511

I really dislike Xzibit, I really REALLY do. The only rapper I listen to
is Eminem, his lyrics are just great (most of the time, not so much on
his early years). I really don’t know how to feel regarding this, I can
enjoy rap music, sure, but I hate it when they mix it up with Metal…
I’m trying to stay positive about this record, Hydra’s artwork looks
amazing and I loved the collaboration with Tarja, but Xzibit? Please be a good song… please…

  • viktor511

Sadly no, they are not kidding…

  • viktor511

I’m willing to give them a chance, I mean, I don’t hate rap, but I really don’t like Xzibit in particular… I don’t know how to feel about this…

  • tiak

    yeah a new CD :D !!!
that’s a good idea to put a songbook with the Deluxe Pack
but I ask myself, it’s the guitar’s sheets (with tab)? or piano’s sheets
I wanna play some songs with an harp.

  • Drew McKerlie

    Yay! finally available in Canada!

  • luiz ricardo de andrade

    Fron Brazil?

  • Alian Lee Mustang

The moment I found out they were releasing a new album, I dropped what I was doing and pre-ordered the Deluxe Pack. When this comes out I will have every album they have released.

  • Lea Schuster

I love Evanescence almost as much as Within Temptation. Almost. Amy Lee, Tarja and Sharon are my three rock goddesses. Without Evanescence I never would have discovered WT and without WT I never would have discovered Tarja, so they are all chained together. Like my little familiy of rock :D They are all great (in my opinion).

  • Demigod

    Recall Aerosmith/RunDMC? Anthrax/Public Enemy? They weren’t horrible..

  • Anonymous

Dit clipje is ideaal om de show mee te beginnen^^

  • Oeds Kuperus

Today the Hydra box was delivered

  • Nadun

People might have different ideas about Hydra. They say that it is not heavy enough, it’s Pop/Pop-rock etc..etc…

But let me take their head out of the toilet.. If you compare WT albums from Enter to Hydra, Hydra is the album which has the heaviest riffs and double bass drums.

Do not forget that you cannot separate WT and symphonic elements. *They defined Symphonic Metal*. I agree, WT can make more heavier tracks. But there is “Nothing” to blame about this Album.
The Best Album so far….!!! 10/10

  • Nadun

Don’t worry..! One of the best songs of the album…!!!

  • viktor511

Where can I listen to it?

  • http://verwijs.wordpress.com/ André Verwijs

Many fans who ordered Hydra have to wait a LONG time to get it.
especially from Amazon US, fans who ordered the have to wait until march 4th

  • John Busby

Love the album “Hydra”. “Tell Me Why” is my favorite track. I am certain some fans will complain and rant about Hydra I have all the CDs starting with “Enter”. I put them in a play list in chronological order and enjoy listening to the entire gamut. This is not your ordinary “metal” band. They have demonstrated their ability to create and perform a very wide range of music. Honestly, how many other bands do that as well as WT? They are artists and they continue to create really good music. I got to meet them last week in Los Angeles, and that was a real treat. Thank you, WT!

  • K. C. Johnson

I am a huge fan of Within Temptation and was really looking forward to this disc. When I listened and heard Xzibit with his mf****ing I was very disappointed. A great band has been tainted with rap and for no creative reason that I can see. It reminds me of the big record company days when they would want a band to cross over. This is not a cross over band and their music is light years beyond the ignorance of rap music (in today’s form). Xzibit is no RUN DMC. Rap still had class back then.
